When did you move to The Manor?

We moved to Manor in June of 2025 and this was after a selection process that involved several locations. One of the biggest draws was the fact that we are closer to our son Tom who lives steps away and also the fact that the Manor represented good value for the money. Compared to the Washington DC area, suburban Maryland and even coastal Delaware, The Manor was the best package.

What do you enjoy most in your retirement lifestyle?

The food service is great. I feel sometimes like we’re on a cruise because every day we get up, plan our day around where we’re going to eat and what we’re going to have on the menu. We’ve also enjoyed the events here. But it’s not just food or just housing, but it’s also neighbors and the hospitality — it’s wonderful. Since we have never really lived in the south, the southern hospitality is amazing. It really is.
We make a point of visiting and getting to know other people. I love that you can start a conversation and all of a sudden it just takes off and you’ve learned so much about your neighbors, where they’ve come from; what they like to do here. We really enjoy that social part.

How did you know you wanted to live in a Retirement Community?

My family, going all the way back to my great-grandmother, lived in a retirement home. Then when the time came, my grandparents moved in, and so did my mother. I think the point I learned from that was the importance of positioning ourselves in a way that we can enjoy our retirement years and not be a burden to the kids … so we’re now in a community that will support us as we age. I’m happy to give my kids the relief I felt as the son and grandson of someone who lived in a retirement community.

We both had that role model in our families. I recently turned 80; Wes is 70, and I thought, I am so glad we’re here because, I mean, I am counting the years. I have no idea what my health will be, but we’ve assured all the kids that if or when something happens, they do not need to drop everything and make decisions for us. We’re covered in a very wonderful way, and we are blessed to have that.

Do you have any final thoughts or advice for someone considering a move to The Manor?

If there’s any way possible, don’t wait too long to make that decision. Do it for your family and most importantly, do it for yourself.
